The belt on a Savage is tougher than you seem to think. I owned an '87 for three years while living in Idaho and Montana. During those three years I had many sharp rocks caught between the belt and sprocket and got nothing more than a few nicks. I traded it in at 30,000+ miles and the original belt still had plenty of miles left in it.
